Garden tip of the week.

I would love to garden, but live in an apartment complex and have very little growing space. Any suggestions?

Garden vertically! I'm sure you have a few containers planted. That's a great start. But insert trellises in your larger pots. Simple wire tripods and inverted tomato cages are good, too. Plant vines and let them grow upward while companion plants spill over the edges of the pots. Hang baskets from the balcony above. Wrought-iron pot rings can be screwed to wooden surfaces. They're available in several sizes to hold pots from 4" to 8" diameter. Europeans are masters at turning small spaces into lush gardens. Check out some books on Holland, England, France, Italy, Portugal and Spain for inspiration.

What grows behind that wall?

Gardens entice me. Walled ones seduce me to point at doorways and windows, to lean over fences, to poke my lens through grates and gates, to stroll brazenly where others may be too timid to tread. These photographs amount to a confession of sorts. Follow me now for a New Year's Day walk to peek behind garden walls of Charleston.
