Double-Flowered Amaryllis

Hippeastrum, commonly but erroneously known as Amaryllis, are actually native to South America. Bulb growers in the Netherlands began developing them in the 19th century. Dutch Hippeastrum are grown in the Netherlands.

The plants in this group produce "double" flowers.

Hippeastrum are easily grown indoors, so they are very popular as gift items during the Christmas season. They can be grown outdoors in USDA climate zones 8 through 11.
