Hippeastrum, commonly but erroneously known as Amaryllis, are actually native to South America. Bulb growers in the Netherlands began developing them in the 19th century. Dutch Hippeastrum are grown in the Netherlands.

In the 1940s, some Dutch growers began developing them in South Africa. Thus, South African Hippeastrum are grown in that country.

Hippeastrum are easily grown indoors. Because they are readily available in late fall and early winter, they are very popular as gift items during the Christmas season. They can be grown outdoors in USDA climate zones 8 through 11.
