Hippeastrum papilio, commonly called Butterfly Amaryllis, is native to the rain forests of Brazil. Not discovered until 1967, it took the horticultural world by storm when it became commercially available.
Papilio may take longer to bloom than hybrid Hippeastrum, and it has the reputation of not blooming as dependably as hybrids. Nevertheless, its exotic appearance and unusual blooms make it well worth the effort.
