Modern Kaufmanniana Tulips were developed from the species of the same name, which is native to Turkestan. The stems are much shorter than most tulips, and they are among the earliest of tulips to bloom. Open blooms often resemble water lilies.
Kaufmanniana Tulips are perfect for containers and alpine gardens. Foliage is also interesting, often showing dark colored variegation. They naturalize well in areas where tulips are easily grown.
