Common names within the genus include Moneywort and Loosestrife. Plant height ranges from 1 inch to 6 inches. Foliage may be evergreen, semi-evergreen or herbaceous. Flowers are produced throughout the growing season. Lysimachia spreads by sending out runners, adding richness and color to the garden.

Various species may be used as ground covers, lawn substitutes, in container gardens, hanging baskets, and cascading over stone walls. It's fine around stepping-stones, though not all tolerate foot traffic.
