Gelsemium - Carolina Jessamine
Our native Carolina Jessamine, Gelsemium sempervirens, is a spectacular ornamental vine that is well-known throughout the Southeast. Semi-evergreen foliage (about 1 inch to 4 inches long) is elongated. Beautiful fragrant yellow flowers (1-1/2 inch long, tubular) appear in early Spring (often less profusely in Fall) creating elegant garlands of yellow on arbors and pergolas.
When used as a ground cover, it helps to control erosion and stabilize soil. Mature height as a ground cover is only 24 inches, but when allowed to climb, it will just keep on going.
Carolina Jessamine is a nice low maintenance plant for USDA climate zones 7 to 9. It is adaptable to most soil conditions, and thrives in full sun to partial shade. Carolina Jessamine tolerates drought, too. Recommended pH is 5.5 to 8.5.
